MURDER ON ARGUS

Editorial Review

"Murder on Argus (Particle Death Book 1) by Shawn Conners is a science-fiction murder mystery set in deep space. Earth has long since died, and the survivors of humanity live in deep space on massive stations and suitable planets where habitation is possible. Ruling over humanity is the ubiquitous BarCor corporation, instrumental in saving humanity from their dying planet...

Murder on Argus, at its core, is a good, old-fashioned detective novel that just happens to be set in deep space. I prefer my science fiction heavy on character and story development and light on imaginative, futuristic technology, and this book fits the bill admirably. Shawn Conners does an exceptional job of weaving an archetypal crusty, grumpy detective, reminiscent of the 1940s-style detective, into a sleek, modern technical environment.

I was particularly impressed by the character building, and readers will definitely identify and empathize with many of them, especially Paka, Min Moran, and of course, Dack Speedle himself. Although the tech innovation was minimal, it was well explained. I also appreciated that the author explained how humanity had to reach for the stars to survive.

I am excited for the second book. I thoroughly enjoyed and highly recommend this book."

Inside the Argus System: The World Behind Particle Death

The Argites are the system's defining oddity: a microscopic particulate organism native to the mining planet of Eos. Left alone, they are inert. After being harvested and refined, they can be deployed to any application with electric or bioelectric impulses. They are used in ship and weapons manufacturing, 3d printing technology, and systems maintenance. This is precisely why every faction in the system wants a stake in the trade. Holding the exclusive Argus System charter is the mega-conglomerate Barbarant Corporation, which sits in the Cathedral City on the barren surface of Eos. They control nearly every aspect of life in the Argus System.

Argus Station itself runs on a fusion core supplemented by a solar collection array angled toward the system's single star. The core alone could power the station, but the array buys redundancy, a hedge against the kind of failure that station engineers discuss in low voices and never in writing.

It is in this setting that the body is found, with nothing to suggest foul play. Yet Dr. Jareen is still dead. It is up to Constable Detective Dack Speedle and rookie partner Min Moran to unravel the mystery and stop a psychopathic killer before its too late for everyone.

But BarCor agents are always listening...

Watching...

Always...
